What About “Groupthink”?

Posted By THE VOICE On February 22, 2009 @ 00:51 In 2009 Campaign, Truth Squad, SCA Board, Community Affairs | 1 Comment

Recent postings suggesting that past boards and some standing committees have suffered from groupthink syndrome have stimulated a broader discussion on the behavior, and how it relates to the way the board and finance committee have ganged up on Bob Frank to try to suppress his efforts to clean up some key financial and contracting problems.

We must admit to being a bit surprised that many of our residents seem to be unfamiliar with the concepts and consequences of “groupthink” behavior.  Many of us were trained as managers to be aware of the natural human tendencies to be vulnerable to groupthink, and to be prepared as leaders on how to circumvent it to achieve superior results from our groups.

What is “groupthink”?  [1] “A mode of thinking that people engage in when they are deeply involved in a cohesive in-group, when the members’ strivings for unanimity override their motivation to realistically appraise alternative courses of action.[3]”

With this in mind, it is easier for some individuals to understand why we must insist on pressing for corrections to certain financial errors and related misconduct.

Even though Bob Frank is called the rogue or maverick board member by some groupthink leaders, it can not be allowed to deter the work.  Such terms are not really negative slurs.  You need to be aware of what is going on to be confident that the majority of our SCA members will eventually recognize the truth and demand appropriate actions be undertaken.

Groupthink…fits Sun City Anthem community management like a glove doesn’t it. How about these two.

1) Illusions of unanimity - wow, how true it is!
2) Mindguards — self-appointed members who shield the rest of the group from dissenting information. Bet you can guess the names that come to mind there, right?

Thank God we have someone as highly experienced and well versed as Bob Frank fighting for us and doing his best to force responsible fiscal management and compliance with the laws. Talk about an uphill battle, the management is pathetic.

It’s so bad one would think that it’s intentional. How could there be so much incompetence by so many who claim to be so well qualified? Then of course there’s the obvious attempt to sweep the mistakes under the rug. Not only have their management techniques been sorely lacking, there have been flagrant violations of fiduciary duties and Nevada Statutes. Then there’s the matter of the lost millions, erroneous accounting, failure to audit, excess dues, followed now by a terribly wrong effort to spend, spend, spend before we have to pay federal income tax on the excess funds. Pray tell where do they come up with such idiotic ideas? They are scared to death of an audit, is it any wonder? And why didn’t the management company tell the County Assessor that only the restaurant is open to the public, not the entire Anthem center, so we’ve been wasting money paying property tax on 75,000 square feet instead of only 7,000 square feet?

Saints preserve us!
