Updated Recommendations on Tirzo

Posted By kayfrank On March 21, 2010 @ 18:10 In 2010 Campaign, kay_frank, SCA Board, Community Affairs, Laws & Rules, Operations | 1 Comment

I have received email and been asked to be more specific in my revised recommendations on the restaurant lease matter.

Here is today’s expanded update:
———-
My position is that the Board signed a lease with Tirzo’s shell company just a few months ago. He has been in default since the beginning quarter by failing to fully pay all obligations–on time.

This shows he may have falsely claimed to have the resources to operate for at least half a year without having to make a profit. There is no reason to allow him additional time to pay anything, nor should he be allowed to get behind at any time in the future–in the unlikely event he is allowed to continue.

Tirzo’s key problems are that he has:

(1) Shown he does not have access to the resources to operate the restaurant and catering operations without having to make a profit each month,

(2) Failed to deliver the quality of menus, food, and services required to attract the board’s business and the vast majority of SCA residents and clubs,

(3) Proven he knows virtually nothing about how to successfully market his products and services,

(4) Demonstrated he does not know how to hire experienced employees and/or train inexperienced individuals, and

(5) Demonstrated he does not know how to establish viable business plans, manage his cash flows, or attract investment capital.

I sincerely want a restaurant in Trumpets that consistently provides both quality table services and high quality catering services. But, it seems clear that the board knows Tirzo is not capable of doing the job. Fact: when given a choice of caterers to use for the opening event at Liberty Center, the board did not trust Tirzo.

The association should use professional business practices to obtain a successful operator of Trumpets for the benefit of the residents and clubs.

The following comments are for those who might be planning to publicly object to what the board has telegraphed it is intending to do concerning Tirzo’s Bisto lease.

Speaking out/acting up at board meetings and workshops can sometimes give the member the illusion of progress; but, history proves that it fails to make a difference in board decisions.

The only way to really participate in the policy process is to elect directors with different expertise, different attitudes, and different ethics. Even the current director (running for election) most involved with the current lease claims to only have had experience with university cafeteria-type food services oversight. That is a far cry from having the professional, hands-on experience by directly owning and managing large, profitable restaurants for many years. The SCA boards have never sought or listened to local professional expertise/competent owner-operators while developing and making restaurant lease policy decisions.

Meanwhile, please note that Mr. Berman seems to function as the board/CAM spokesman. When was the last time a CAM manager or director responded with written responses to specific questions on a community message board, at board meetings, at workshops or town halls?

Since 2005, David has been the most passionate, the most prolific, and the most influential SCA member when it comes to promoting restaurant policies and operations. He has been the SCA energizer bunny for food and restaurant comments and political influence. He has posted more than a dozen times on the SCA-HOA message board topic, and he has placed thousands of lines of comments on his blog and other sites about restaurant-related policy and food matters.

We must recognize that David and his many political associates have been directly involved in deciding everything we have received since 2005 concerning restaurant matters. They deserve credit for both their claimed successes, and the massive failures.

If you strongly dislike the results from the S&D Cafe and Tirzo’s Bistro leases, your only chance for major improvements in the future is to vote for board candidates with different management capabilities, different expertise, and different attitudes. Continuing to support the board’s political action party’s candidates will only provide more of the same failures as before.
